A comprehensive technology renovation of a 9,800 sq ft mid-century estate — preserving architectural character while integrating a private cinema, whole-home automation, and invisible technology infrastructure.
Project Overview
This Myers Park estate — a distinguished 1960s mid-century residence on a tree-lined street in one of Charlotte's most prestigious neighborhoods — required a technology renovation that honored its architectural heritage while delivering modern performance. The homeowners wanted invisible technology: no visible speakers, no cluttered keypads, and no equipment in living spaces.
Peters Audio Video was engaged during the renovation planning phase, working alongside the architect and interior designer to develop a technology masterplan that addressed every system — cinema, audio, lighting, shading, security, and networking — as a unified environment rather than a collection of independent installations.
The result: a home where Savant automation operates every major system from a single interface, a reference-grade private cinema occupies the lower level, and 24 audio zones deliver architecturally invisible sound throughout the property.
The Challenge
Retrofit projects in historic neighborhoods like Myers Park present unique challenges that new construction avoids entirely. Existing wall cavities are often too shallow for modern in-wall speakers. Plaster-and-lath construction makes cable routing difficult. And the architectural character that makes these homes desirable places strict constraints on visible technology.
This project required threading new structured cabling through finished walls, engineering a dedicated cinema space within existing foundation constraints, and integrating modern lighting control into period-appropriate switch locations — all without disrupting the home's mid-century aesthetic.
