What Invisible Speakers Are — and When They Are the Right Choice

Sonance Invisible Series speakers are flat panels mounted flush with the wall or ceiling surface. The drywall finisher skims over the panel and the painter finishes it with the rest of the room, so there is no grille, frame or cutout. The wall itself produces the sound.

They are the right choice where architecture comes first: plaster ceilings, paneled libraries, clean modern rooms and primary suites. They spread sound widely and evenly, which suits background and ambient music. They are not a substitute for a dedicated home theater speaker system — for that, we design with conventional architectural speakers.

Every invisible speaker is part of the home's whole-home audio design: zoned, amplified from the equipment rack and controlled through Savant, keypads, the app or voice.

    Where Invisible Speakers Work Best

    Living & Great Rooms

Background music across open plans without grilles breaking coffered ceilings, paneled walls or a designer's sightlines.

    Primary Suites & Baths

Quiet, evenly spread sound in bedrooms and dressing rooms, where visible speakers are least welcome.

    Kitchens & Dining

Music that fills the room at conversation level, placed around cabinetry, lighting and range hoods.

    Libraries & Formal Spaces

Rooms with plaster detailing or historic character in Myers Park and Eastover homes, where the finish has to read as untouched.

How an Invisible Speaker Installation Runs

    1. 1. Room and finish review. We confirm wall and ceiling finishes with your designer, and check framing, joists and lighting layouts before choosing locations.
    2. 2. Audio design. Panel sizes, zones, subwoofer needs and amplification are documented with the rest of the audio system.
    3. 3. Rough-in. Wiring runs to each location during new construction or renovation, and back-boxes or frames are set where required.
    4. 4. Mounting and finishing. Panels are set flush; the drywall finisher skims and the painter finishes them with the room, following the manufacturer's finishing guidance.
    5. 5. Tuning and handover. Each zone is equalized for its room, added to your control system, and documented.

    Invisible Speaker Questions

    What are Sonance invisible speakers?

Sonance Invisible Series speakers are flat-panel loudspeakers mounted flush into a wall or ceiling and then finished over with skim coat and paint, so no grille, frame or opening remains. The surface itself becomes the speaker, which is why they suit rooms where the architecture must stay completely clean.

How do invisible speakers sound compared to in-ceiling speakers?

Invisible speakers radiate sound across a wide area and work well for background music and ambient listening throughout a room. Conventional in-wall or in-ceiling speakers usually play louder and deeper for the same size. For rooms where bass matters, we pair invisible panels with a concealed subwoofer; for a dedicated theater we generally recommend conventional architectural speakers instead.

Can invisible speakers be installed in an existing Charlotte home?

Yes, but the wall or ceiling must be opened, the panel set flush and the surface re-finished to match the surrounding plaster or drywall. That finishing step is the most important part of the job. New construction and major renovations are the easiest time, because the drywall finisher can treat the panels as part of the normal finish schedule.

Do invisible speakers work with plaster, wallpaper or wood paneling?

They are designed for drywall and plaster finishes with a thin skim coat and paint. Heavy textures, thick wallpaper, tile, stone or wood paneling over the panel affect the sound or are not suitable. We review finishes with your designer before choosing locations.

    How are invisible speakers controlled?

Like any architectural speaker, they connect to amplification in the equipment rack and are controlled through the whole-home audio system — Savant, keypads, the app or voice — with each room or zone selected and adjusted independently.

How much do Sonance invisible speakers cost?

Cost depends on the number of rooms, the panel sizes, whether subwoofers are needed, amplification, and how much finishing work is involved. We do not quote from a speaker count — after reviewing plans or walking the home, we issue a documented design and proposal so scope and investment are clear before work begins.
