Clients rarely ask which control platform is best in the abstract. They ask which one will still feel effortless in year seven, when there are three streaming services, a new television, a pool heater, and a house manager who did not attend the original walkthrough. Savant and Control4 both answer that well. They answer it differently. Interface philosophy Savant's interface is deliberately restrained: scenes and rooms presented as a small number of clear choices, with complexity hidden behind the design. It rewards households that want the house to do a few things beautifully and predictably. Control4 exposes more configurability at the interface level, which suits owners who enjoy adjusting things and estates with a technically engaged staff member. Energy and power management This is the clearest functional separation in 2026. Savant's power platform — smart panels, circuit-level monitoring, storage, and generator and EV integration — puts electrical load management inside the same system that runs lighting and shading. For an estate with solar, battery storage, or a whole-home generator, that consolidation is genuinely valuable: load shedding during an outage becomes a scene rather than an electrician's site visit. Control4 integrates with third-party energy hardware but does not own that layer. Lighting Both platforms drive excellent lighting. Savant's own lighting line, with tunable-white keypad control, is well matched to circadian programming and to homes where lighting design is the priority. Control4 has deep third-party lighting support, which matters on projects already committed to a specific keypad aesthetic. Audio and video distribution Savant's distributed audio hardware is a strength — high channel counts, clean streaming integration, tidy rack design. Control4 has a broader third-party device library, which occasionally matters when a project inherits unusual equipment. The variable that outweighs the platform Both systems fail in the same circumstance: an integrator who programs once and disappears. Control platforms are living systems. Firmware moves, streaming APIs change, families change how they use rooms. The platform decision is worth an afternoon of discussion; the choice of who maintains it is worth considerably more. Ask any prospective integrator what their service model looks like in year three, whether they monitor systems remotely, and how programming changes are requested and billed. How we recommend We specify Savant on the majority of estate projects, and we are candid about why: the interface restraint suits the households we serve, and the power and energy layer is unmatched for large residences with generators, storage, or EV charging. Where a client has an existing Control4 investment or a specific device requirement, we say so rather than force a replacement. Questions worth answering before you choose Is there solar, battery storage, a generator, or EV charging now or in the next five years? How many people other than the owners need to operate the house — staff, family, guests? Is there existing control hardware worth preserving? Who will maintain the system, and what does that agreement look like in writing?
